The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and empowerment of girls. In a press statement released today, NAWOJ Lagos highlighted the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” emphasizing the need to create supportive environments for girls to realize their dreams.
The statement, signed by Chairperson Dr. Adeola Ekine underscored the numerous challenges girls face, including gender-based violence, limited access to quality education, early marriage, and harmful traditional practices. Despite these obstacles, the resilience, creativity, and strength of girls were celebrated.
NAWOJ Lagos called on all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, private sector, and individuals, to take concrete steps to:
Ensure Access to Quality Education: Prioritize policies and investments that guarantee equal access to education for girls, particularly in STEM fields, to prepare them for future leadership roles.
Promote Gender Equality and Address Harmful Practices: Strengthen the implementation of laws protecting girls and women, and raise community awareness about safeguarding their rights.
Create Opportunities for Leadership and Empowerment: Provide platforms for girls to express their ideas, develop leadership skills, and participate in decision-making processes.
Foster Safe Spaces for Growth: Ensure that girls have safe and supportive environments in schools, homes, and communities where they can pursue their dreams without fear of violence or discrimination.
The association also highlighted the role of media in shaping societal attitudes and pledged to continue using their platforms to advocate for girls’ rights and highlight their achievements.
On this International Day of the Girl Child, NAWOJ Lagos urges everyone to renew their commitment to empowering Nigerian girls to envision and create the future they desire. Together, we can make their dreams a reality.
