MUMMY IKATE LAID TO REST IN GRAND STYLE— ADERINTOS, ADENIRANS, CHILDREN, FAMILY AND WELL WISHERS BID HER FAREWELL

It was a day of deep emotions and fond memories as family members, friends, and well-wishers gathered to bid a final farewell to Mrs. Janet Olawunmi Aderinto (née Adeniran), affectionately known as “Mummy Ikate.”
Fondly remembered for her warmth, humility, and enduring love for family, Mummy Ikate was one of the elder sisters of my father , late Patrick Ojo Adewunmi Adeniran. I got to know her from the tender age of six. Calm and ever-graceful, she was a constant presence in our lives, visiting almost every weekend at our Iyana Ipaja home then.
In our family tradition, we affectionately called our father’s sisters by the areas they lived in — hence, “Mummy Ikate,” after her residence in the Ikate area of Surulere, Lagos. Even after moving with her husband to their home in Ibafo, Ogun State, the name stuck. Her children, were more than cousins; they were like siblings to us. We also had “Mummy London” and “Mummy Ebute Metta,” all now of blessed memory.

Mummy Ikate’s passing came as a rude shock. A woman of rare virtue, patience, and compassion, she touched the lives of everyone around her. When news of her demise reached me on September 30, 2025, I was deeply saddened. Despite having another important engagement that same period, I cancelled it to attend her funeral and pay my last respects.
Arriving a little late at the church service, I found myself overcome with emotion during the final farewell. As I walked past her casket, tears rolled down my cheeks — a silent goodbye to a woman who meant so much to me and our entire family.
Born on June 6, 1946, in Ijero-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to Late Rev. Alfred Adewale Adeniran, young mummy ikate lost her mother at a tender age. She completed her early education and vocational training in tailoring in Ekiti before relocating to Lagos, where she established a thriving tailoring business in Ikate, Surulere, Lagos.

Though she was raised in the Anglican Church, she joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in 1998 and remained a devoted member until her passing. She was married to Late Pa Layiwola Julius Aderinto, who predeceased her in March 2023. Their union was blessed with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom cherished her as a loving mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law.
Her well-attended funeral took place at RCCG Beautiful Gate Parish, Ibafo, where both the Service of Songs and Funeral Service were held. The reception followed at Red Cross, Kara, Ibafo, drawing a large crowd of family members, friends, and well-wishers who came to celebrate a life well-lived.

Mummy Ikate lived gracefully, loved deeply, and served faithfully. Her legacy of kindness, faith, and humility will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Rest in peace, Mummy Ikate. You will forever be missed.
